What is a standard tip percentage in the US?
For sit-down restaurants, most people land between 15% and 20%. Twenty percent is common for good service; 18% is a solid middle ground. Bars and coffee counters often get $1–2 per drink or 15%+ on a tab.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Pre-tax is the usual habit — tip on the food and drink subtotal. Tipping on the post-tax total is fine too if you want a simpler round number. Servers care more about the dollar amount than which line you used.

How does Round total up work?
